Capacitors
Capacitors. Assortment of capacitors of different sizes, shapes and magnitudes. Capacitors are used to store electric charge. They consist of two metal plates separated by a dielectric (non conducting, separating material). When connected to an electric current one plate receives electrons from the current, the other plate loses electrons to the current. This will happen until the charge on the plates is in equilibrium with the potential difference in the circuit, and current stops flowing. If the source of the potential difference (ie. a battery) is removed, then the capacitor will discharge through the circuit in the opposite direction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an assortment of capacitors, each varying in size, shape, and magnitude. These remarkable devices are designed to store electric charge and play a crucial role in various technological applications. Composed of two metal plates separated by a non-conducting dielectric material, capacitors demonstrate the fascinating principles of physics at work. When connected to an electric current, one plate receives electrons while the other loses them until equilibrium is reached with the potential difference in the circuit. This process halts the flow of current. However, once the source of potential difference (such as a battery) is disconnected, these ingenious capacitors discharge through the circuit but in reverse direction. The significance of capacitors lies not only in their ability to store charge but also in their contribution to electrical equipment and electronics as essential components. With units measured in farads (symbolized as F), they exemplify how science intertwines with technology seamlessly. In this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library, we witness an array of assorted capacitors that symbolize innovation and progress within our modern world. Let this photograph serve as a reminder that behind every technological marvel lies intricate physical concepts waiting to be explored further.
