Car lights outline the Tevatron accelerator

The circular tunnel containing the Tevatron accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), Illinois, is outlined by the lights of a car driving around the service road above the tunnel. The Tevatron is 2 kilometres in diameter & contains two accelerators one above the other. The top accelerator uses ordinary magnets & accelerates protons to 150 GeV. It then passes them to the lower accelerator, with superconducting magnets, which accelerates them up to 1000 GeV (1 TeV). Beside the service road is a circular " moat" of water to cool the magnets. This 15-minute exposure was taken from the top of Fermilabs 16-floor administration building

Accelerator Chicago Fermilab Nuclear Research Particle Physics Laboratory Us A Night View

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of car lights outlining the massive Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab in Illinois. The circular tunnel, spanning an impressive 2 kilometers in diameter, houses two accelerators stacked on top of each other. The upper accelerator employs ordinary magnets to propel protons to a staggering speed of 150 GeV before passing them down to the lower accelerator. Equipped with superconducting magnets, this lower section further accelerates the protons up to an astonishing 1000 GeV (1 TeV). As if highlighting its grandeur, a car can be seen driving along the service road above the tunnel, casting vibrant streaks of light that beautifully trace its outline. Adjacent to this road lies a circular moat filled with water, serving as a cooling system for the powerful magnets within. Captured from atop Fermilab's towering 16-floor administration building, this breathtaking long-exposure shot provides a unique night view of one of Chicago's most renowned particle physics laboratories. It showcases both the scientific marvel and architectural beauty that coexist harmoniously within Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This remarkable photograph is part of Science Photo Library's collection and serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge through nuclear research and particle physics exploration at facilities like Fermilab.
