Castniid moth larvae

Castniid moth larvae. These specimens, from French Guiana in South America, have been preserved so that their haemplymph (body fluid) can be extracted. It is a type of sun moth, the adults of which fly during daytime. The larvae develop underground or inside trees. The haemolymph of this and other insects is being screened in search of new antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs by a company called Entomed, based in Strasbourg in France. Between 1999 and 2003, Entomed analysed more than 175 novel molecules with potential medical effects

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Castniid moth larvae, carefully preserved from French Guiana in South America. These fascinating specimens have been meticulously stored to extract their haemolymph, which is their vital body fluid. The sun moth, to which these larvae belong, is known for its daytime flight patterns. Interestingly, these larvae undergo development either underground or within trees. The significance of this image goes beyond its aesthetic appeal. It sheds light on the groundbreaking research being conducted by Entomed, a renowned company based in Strasbourg, France. With a focus on screening insect haemolymph for potential medical applications, Entomed explores new frontiers in antibiotic discovery and seeks breakthroughs in anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer drugs. Between 1999 and 2003 alone, Entomed analyzed over 175 novel molecules derived from various insects like these castniid moth larvae. Their dedication to uncovering nature's hidden pharmaceutical treasures has immense implications for clinical medicine and biology as a whole. This photograph not only captures the marvels of nature but also serves as a reminder that even seemingly insignificant creatures can hold invaluable secrets waiting to be unlocked through scientific exploration. Science Photo Library presents us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world of zoology and entomology while highlighting the extraordinary work undertaken by researchers at Entomed.
