Charcoal furnace. Ruins of the 19th-century Forbes Iron Companys charcoal furnace at East Canaan, Connecticut, USA. The building dates from 1832 and was rebuilt in 1853. Dating from 1937, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
