Chicxulub impact crater, Yucatan, Mexico

Chicxulub impact crater, Yucatan, Mexico. This impact crater (circle, upper left) is more than 180 kilometres across and is located on land and underwater off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is thought to have been formed around 65 million years ago by the impact of an asteroid or comet core which was at least 10 kilometres across. This massive impact is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species as dust thrown into the atmosphere led to the lowering of global temperatures. The crater was discovered in the 1970s and 1980s. It is one of the largest confirmed impact structures in the world

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Chicxulub impact crater, located in Yucatan, Mexico. Spanning over 180 kilometers across, this colossal circular formation extends both on land and underwater off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Believed to have been created approximately 65 million years ago by a cataclysmic collision with an asteroid or comet core measuring at least 10 kilometers in diameter, this impact is renowned for its role in the extinction of dinosaurs and numerous other species. The discovery of this monumental crater took place during the 1970s and 1980s, revealing one of the largest confirmed impact structures worldwide. The profound consequences resulting from this event are attributed to vast amounts of dust propelled into the atmosphere, leading to a significant drop in global temperatures. This visually striking illustration not only portrays the geological magnificence but also serves as a historical testament to Earth's tumultuous past. It symbolizes an era when prehistoric creatures roamed North America's ancient landscapes before succumbing to an unimaginable catastrophe. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork capturing nature's power and resilience, it reminds us that our planet has endured countless transformations throughout its existence. This image encapsulates both scientific curiosity and artistic representation while commemorating a pivotal moment in planetary science—the end of one epoch marked by mass extinctions and ushering in another known as "the age of mammals.
