EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Christopher Wren, an iconic figure in English architecture and astronomy. Known for his masterpieces such as St Paul's Cathedral, which proudly stands in the lower right corner of the image, Wren's contributions to London's skyline are immeasurable. However, his brilliance extended far beyond architectural wonders. As a Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College and later at the University of Oxford, Wren made significant observations of celestial bodies like the Moon and Saturn. His expertise spanned multiple scientific disciplines including mechanics, optics, and meteorology. Wren's influence was not limited to academia; he played a pivotal role in shaping England's scientific community. He co-designed the Monument to the Great Fire of London alongside Robert Hooke – an innovative structure that doubled as a scientific instrument. As one of the founders of the esteemed Royal Society in 1660, Wren held its presidency from 1680-1682. His dedication to advancing knowledge earned him knighthood in 1673. Gary Brown's artwork beautifully captures this distinguished gentleman who left an indelible mark on history. This portrait serves as a testament to Sir Christopher Wren’s immense talent and unwavering commitment to both architectural marvels and groundbreaking astronomical discoveries.
