Chronic bronchitis, X-ray

Chronic bronchitis, coloured X-ray. This condition almost exclusively affects smokers. It is often associated with emphysema, which is known as COLD (chronic obstructive lung disease). Bronchitis shows up as the faint streaky areas on either side of the spine. This is caused by inflammation of the lining of the bronchi, the air tubes in the lungs. Chronic bronchitis causes sputum, a yellow- green fluid, which is coughed up over several years. The lungs occupy the spaces either side of the spinal column (running vertically down centre), and are surrounded by the ribs (horizontal bands). The heart (yellow, lower right) and diaphragm (across bottom) are seen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the visual representation of chronic bronchitis through a coloured X-ray. Chronic bronchitis, a condition primarily affecting smokers, is often accompanied by emphysema and collectively referred to as COLD (chronic obstructive lung disease). The faint streaky areas on both sides of the spine indicate the presence of bronchitis, which results from inflammation in the lining of the air tubes within the lungs known as bronchi. Over time, individuals with chronic bronchitis experience coughing up sputum – a yellow-green fluid – for several years. The lungs, occupying spaces adjacent to either side of the spinal column running vertically down the centre, are encased by horizontal bands formed by ribs. In this image, we can also observe other vital structures such as the heart depicted in yellow at the lower right corner and diaphragm spanning across its bottom. This powerful visual serves as a reminder of how chronic bronchitis impacts respiratory health and highlights its association with smoking. By shedding light on this disorder's radiographic manifestations and emphasizing its significance within medical science, this photograph contributes to our understanding of pulmonary diseases while underscoring their implications for public health care.
