Clostridium perfringens bacteria

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of chains of the Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore- forming bacteria Clostridium perfringens (also known as Clostridium welchii or Welchs bacillus). The bacterium causes blood poisoning, types of food poisoning, & gas gangrene in humans. C. perfringens secretes exotoxins; one of these, alpha-toxin (a lecithinase enzyme), has the ability to destroy plasma membranes surrounding cells. This may be a primary cause of tissue damage that occurs in cases of gas gangrene. Food poisoning from C. perfringens results from eating foods where the bacteria have developed & formed exotoxins. Magnification: x4100 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of Clostridium perfringens bacteria, a Gram-positive, anaerobic species known for its ability to cause various illnesses in humans. The false-color scanning electron micrograph reveals chains of these spore-forming bacteria, also referred to as Clostridium welchii or Welchs bacillus. Clostridium perfringens is notorious for causing blood poisoning, types of food poisoning, and gas gangrene. Its exotoxins play a crucial role in its pathogenicity. One such toxin is alpha-toxin, an enzyme with lecithinase activity that targets and destroys plasma membranes surrounding cells. This destructive mechanism likely contributes significantly to tissue damage observed in cases of gas gangrene. Food poisoning caused by C. perfringens occurs when individuals consume contaminated foods where the bacteria have proliferated and secreted exotoxins. The consequences can be severe and debilitating. Captured at a magnification of x4100 on 35mm film size, this image offers a glimpse into the microscopic realm inhabited by these harmful microbes. It serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding bacterial biology and taking necessary precautions to prevent infections caused by organisms like Clostridium perfringens.
