COBE observation of dust ring in Earths orbit

Earths dust ring. All-sky map showing dust clouds trailing (large area, left) and leading (right) Earth in its orbit around the Sun. The colours represent infrared intensity at a wave- length of 12 microns, from purple (lowest) to red (highest). The red areas at top right and bottom left are signals from the Milky Way. The clouds are part of a ring of asteroidal dust which orbits the Sun with the Earth. It is thought that the dust came from the zodiacal cloud which envelops the inner Solar System, and has become locked in a gravitational resonance with the Earth. The data were gathered by the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment on NASAs COBE satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable COBE observation of a dust ring in Earth's orbit. The all-sky map reveals an expansive display of trailing and leading dust clouds surrounding our planet as it journeys around the Sun. The vibrant colors, ranging from purple to red, represent the infrared intensity at a wavelength of 12 microns, with red indicating the highest intensity. Notably, the top right and bottom left corners exhibit striking signals emanating from our very own Milky Way galaxy. These celestial clouds are part of an asteroidal dust ring that harmoniously orbits the Sun alongside Earth. Scientists believe that this cosmic debris originated from the zodiacal cloud enveloping our inner Solar System before becoming entrapped in a gravitational resonance with our planet. The data used to create this awe-inspiring image were meticulously collected by NASA's Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment on their groundbreaking COBE satellite. This photograph not only offers a glimpse into Earth's intricate relationship with its surroundings but also serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our place within the vastness of space. Captured by Science Photo Library, this extraordinary visual representation invites us to contemplate both the grandeur and fragility of our existence while igniting wonderment for the mysteries that lie beyond.
