Coloured MRI brain scan showing holoprosencephaly

Holoprosencephaly. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a brain (yellow/cyan) with holoprosencephaly. In this congenital condition, a large abnormal ventricle (fluid-filled cavity, red) develops where the forebrain would normally be. Two healthy ventricles (orange/red) are seen at lower left & right. People with this deformity often have no olfactory system (smell), as well as defects in the optic nerve, eyes and pituitary gland. A range of facial deformities reflect the severity of the brain defect, as does the degree of mental handicap. The condition is caused by trisomy, the inheritance of a third chromosome, in this case involving chromosomes 13, 14, 15 or 18

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured MRI brain scan, revealing the intricate details of holoprosencephaly. The image portrays a brain with this congenital condition, where an abnormal ventricle takes the place of the forebrain. The vibrant yellow and cyan hues highlight the affected area, while two healthy ventricles can be observed at the lower left and right in shades of orange and red. Holoprosencephaly not only affects brain structure but also leads to various complications throughout the body. Individuals with this deformity often experience defects in their olfactory system, optic nerve, eyes, and pituitary gland. The severity of facial deformities depicted in this image reflects the extent of the brain defect as well as mental handicap. Trisomy is identified as one of the causes for this condition - specifically involving chromosomes 13,14,15 or 18. This genetic inheritance results in profound impacts on both physical health and cognitive abilities. The mesmerizing visual representation captured by Science Photo Library serves as a powerful tool for medical professionals studying holoprosencephaly. It provides valuable insights into understanding how abnormalities within our brains can manifest physically and impact overall well-being.
