Coloured SEM of a blood clot in coronary artery

Thrombus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a thrombus (blood clot) inside a coronary artery of the human heart. The artery has been cross-sectioned, showing its wall (brown) and inner lumen (blue). A blood clot (red) is seen, blocking about 30% of the width of the artery. Two coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. A clot in one of these arteries (called coronary thrombosis) is most commonly caused by the build-up of atheroma (fatty deposits) on the artery walls. Impeded blood flow from a clot starves the heart of oxygen and may lead to heart attack. Magnification: x30 at 6x7cm size. x40 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a blood clot, also known as a thrombus, inside a coronary artery of the human heart. The intricate details are brought to life through the cross-sectioned artery, revealing its brown wall and blue inner lumen. A striking red blood clot is prominently displayed, obstructing approximately 30% of the artery's width. The significance of this image lies in its depiction of coronary thrombosis, wherein clots form due to the accumulation of fatty deposits called atheroma on the arterial walls. This condition poses great danger as it hampers blood flow and deprives the heart muscle of vital oxygen, potentially leading to a heart attack. With magnification at x30 for 6x7cm size or x40 for 4x5ins dimensions, this SEM provides an up-close look at an alarming medical phenomenon. It serves as a powerful visual representation reminding us about cardiovascular health and emphasizing how crucial it is to maintain healthy arteries free from obstructions like blood clots. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this image with precision and detail that can be appreciated by both medical professionals and individuals interested in understanding various diseases and conditions affecting our bodies' intricate systems.
