Coloured SEM of cells from the lens of the eye

Lens of the eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fractured section of the lens of the eye. The lens focuses light onto the retina. The transparency of the lens (width 4 millimetres) is due to the absence of nuclei in its cells (long thin lines, running diagonally). The transparency is also due to the crystalline precision of the cell arrangement. Where the cells have been fractured (broken off) the cells can be seen to be arranged in regular stacks. The cells of the lens are called fibres because of their dimensions, with lengths of 10 millimetres and diameters of 5 micrometres. Magnification: x285 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x650 at 6x4.5 inch print size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells extracted from the lens of the eye. The lens, an essential component of our visual system, plays a crucial role in focusing light onto the retina. Measuring approximately 4 millimetres in width, its remarkable transparency is attributed to the absence of nuclei within its elongated and delicate cells. The intricate crystalline precision with which these cells are arranged further contributes to their transparent nature. Upon closer inspection, one can observe long thin lines running diagonally across the image, representing individual lens fibers. These fibers derive their name from their unique dimensions - stretching up to 10 millimeters in length and measuring only 5 micrometers in diameter. In this particular SEM image, we witness a fractured section of the lens where regular stacks of cells become visible due to breakage. This fracture allows us to appreciate the organized arrangement that characterizes these specialized structures responsible for our vision. With magnification levels reaching x285 at a size of 5x7cm or x650 at 6x4.5 inch print sizes, this photograph grants us an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world within our eyes. It serves as a reminder not only of our complex anatomy but also highlights how science continues to unravel and capture breathtaking images that deepen our understanding and appreciation for life's intricacies.
