Coloured SEM of a cut dental inlay
Dental inlay. (Image 3 of 3). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dental inlay (blue) on a mount (brown). The inlay has just come from the miniature milling machine in which it was cut. Inlays are used to replace badly decayed areas of tooth. To fit an inlay, a cavity is cut into the damaged tooth and the exact dimensions of the cavity determined using an oral camera. This data is then fed into a milling machine which cuts a perfectly fitting inlay from a ceramic block. To view a computer graphic of the tooth the dental inlay is being cut for see image M782/145, while to view the inlay being cut see image M782/146

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dental inlay, providing an intricate view of this essential component used in dentistry. The vibrant blue dental inlay is delicately positioned on a mount with a rich brown hue. Freshly cut from the miniature milling machine, this inlay is ready to be fitted into badly decayed areas of teeth. The process of creating and fitting an inlay involves precision and advanced technology. First, a cavity is carefully carved into the damaged tooth using specialized tools while dimensions are determined through an oral camera. This data is then fed into a computer-aided design system that controls the milling machine's movements. With utmost accuracy, the machine cuts out a perfectly fitting ceramic block to create the dental inlay. This image offers insight into both the craftsmanship and technological advancements within modern dentistry. It highlights how science and medicine work hand-in-hand to restore oral health by replacing decayed areas effectively. By utilizing SEM imaging techniques, we can appreciate the intricate details of this dental masterpiece. As we marvel at this microscopic world captured by Science Photo Library, it reminds us of the importance of maintaining our oral health and seeking professional care when needed. Dentistry continues to evolve with cutting-edge techniques like computer-aided design systems that ensure precise fittings for optimal patient outcomes.
