Coloured SEM of dentine with protoplasmic fibres

Dentine. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section of healthy human dentine, a dense calcified tissue which forms the bulk of the body of a tooth. Dentine is similar to bone in composition, but is more highly mineralised & consequently much harder than bone. Dentine forms when the organic matrix secreted by cells called odontoblasts becomes calcified. It occurs between the enamel and the inner dental pulp and is permeated by a network of minute channels. These channels contain protoplasmic processes (coloured pink) of the odontoblasts. Dentine is highly sensitive to both touch & extremes of temperature. Magnification: x1, 100 at 6x7cm size. x2, 960 at 8x6ins, x1570 at 10x7cm master size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of dentine, the robust calcified tissue that forms the main structure of a tooth. Similar in composition to bone but much harder due to higher mineralization, dentine plays a crucial role in dental health. The image reveals the intricate network of protoplasmic fibres within dentine, which are responsible for its sensitivity and responsiveness. Dentine formation occurs when odontoblasts, specialized cells found between the enamel and inner dental pulp, secrete an organic matrix that eventually becomes calcified. This process gives rise to the dense and resilient nature of dentine. Notably, this remarkable tissue is permeated by numerous minute channels through which nutrients flow. The vibrant pink colouring highlights the presence of protoplasmic processes within these channels. These delicate cell extensions contribute to both touch sensitivity and temperature perception in teeth. With magnification at x1,100 for 6x7cm size prints or up to an impressive x2,960 for 8x6ins prints (and even reaching x1,570 at 10x7cm master size), this photograph allows us to marvel at the intricacies hidden within our own bodies. It serves as a testament to scientific exploration and discovery while reminding us of the complexity that lies beneath our smiles.
