Coloured SEM of a dust mite, Dermatophagoides sp

Dust mite. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a dust mite Dermatophagoides sp. in a sample of household dust. It is crawling among hair, fibres and other dust debris. This mite is a cause of dermatitis (skin inflammation) and is implicated as a cause of asthma. Every house has millions of tiny dust mites, living in carpets and furniture and feeding on the flakes of skin shed by their human landlords. The average double bed contains about two million dust mites of various species. The body of the mite is made up of three regions: gnathosoma (head, centre right); propo- dosma (with first two pairs of legs); hysterosoma (abdomen). Magnification: x245 at 5x7cm size. x825 at 8x12ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dust mite, specifically Dermatophagoides sp. The image captures the intricate details of this tiny creature as it crawls amidst hair, fibres, and other debris found in household dust. Dust mites like these are not only fascinating to observe but also play a significant role in our daily lives. Unfortunately, they can be problematic for some individuals as they are known to cause dermatitis (skin inflammation) and even trigger asthma symptoms. It is astonishing to realize that every house harbors millions of these minuscule creatures, residing within carpets and furniture while feasting on the flakes of skin shed by their human landlords. In fact, an average double bed alone may accommodate around two million dust mites from various species. The body structure of the dust mite consists of three distinct regions: gnathosoma (head), propodosma (with its first two pairs of legs), and hysterosoma (abdomen). This SEM image magnified at x245 for 5x7cm size or x825 for 8x12ins provides us with an up-close look at this remarkable arachnid. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented photographers specializing in nature, animal life, zoology, and wildlife subjects; this print serves as a reminder that even within the tiniest corners of our homes lies a hidden world teeming with diverse forms of life - both beneficial
