Coloured SEM of the join between a tooth and crown

Dental crown. Coloured scanning electron microgr- aph (SEM) of the join between a tooth (green) and a dental crown (light blue). The tooth and ceramic crown are coated in debris (orange) which became attached to the tooth when it was extracted for this SEM. If the top of a tooth is badly cracked, decayed or broken, it must be replaced by an artificial crown. The remaining undamaged part of the tooth is cut down to a peg to receive the hollow crown. This crown is then shaped to form a replica of the original tooth and cemented in place. Here, the crack between the tooth and crown allows bacteria to enter and cause secondary tooth decay. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size

Ceramic Crown Dental Dentistry Oral Tooth Condition Disorder Health Care

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the intricate join between a tooth and dental crown. The tooth, depicted in vibrant green, is flawlessly connected to the light blue ceramic crown. However, what truly catches the eye is the orange debris that coats both structures. This debris became attached to the tooth during its extraction process specifically for this SEM. The significance of this image lies in its representation of a common dental procedure. When a tooth suffers from severe damage such as cracking or decay, it necessitates replacement with an artificial crown. In order to accommodate this hollow crown, the undamaged portion of the original tooth is reduced to form a peg-like structure. Unfortunately, as illustrated by the crack visible between the tooth and crown in this image, bacteria can infiltrate through these gaps and lead to secondary decay. This serves as a reminder of how crucial proper oral hygiene practices are in maintaining our dental health. With magnification set at x50 on a 6x7cm scale, every minute detail becomes apparent within this photograph's frame. It offers viewers an up-close look into dentistry and highlights both medical advancements and challenges faced within oral healthcare.
