Coloured SEM of a section through skin

Skin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a section through human skin. The uppermost skin layer is the epidermis (orange & yellow). The stratum corneum (top, orange) is a cornified layer composed of flattened, fused keratin-rich cell remnants which forms the surface of the epidermis. The dead cells from this layer are continuously being shed and replaced from cells from the living epidermal layers below (yellow). These layers contain keratinocytes, specialized cells that synthesize keratin. The lowest layer shown here is the dermis (pink). The dermis is a thick layer of fibrous connective tissue which supports and nourishes the epidermis. Magnification unknown

Cornified Layer Dermis Epidermis Layers Skin Stratum Corneum Surface

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph of a section through human skin, providing us with an extraordinary glimpse into its intricate structure. The epidermis, the uppermost layer of the skin, is beautifully depicted in shades of orange and yellow. At the very top lies the stratum corneum, an orange cornified layer composed of flattened and fused keratin-rich cell remnants that form the surface of the epidermis. Remarkably, this outermost layer continuously sheds dead cells while replenishing itself with new ones from below. The living epidermal layers beneath are represented in vibrant yellow hues and consist mainly of specialized cells called keratinocytes that synthesize keratin. Beneath these remarkable layers lies the dermis, portrayed here in a soft pink shade. This thick layer serves as a foundation for supporting and nourishing the epidermis. Composed primarily of fibrous connective tissue, it plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin. The magnification used to capture this image remains unknown but what is certain is its ability to captivate viewers with its stunning detail and scientific significance. This photograph not only highlights surface anatomy but also offers profound insights into our body's largest organ - our amazing skin!
