Coloured TEM of Ebola viruses
Ebola virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) through an Ebola virus, the cause of Ebola fever. It is a member of the filovirus group of viruses. A number of major outbreaks of Ebola infections have occurred in equatorial Africa since 1976, causing severe and frequently fatal viral haemorrhagic fever. The virus is structurally similar to, but still distinct from, the Marburg virus which causes green monkey disease. Symptoms produced by these two viruses are very similar with high fever, diarrhoea, haemorrhage and a skin rash. Both viruses cause an illness in monkeys resembling that in humans. Magnification: x15, 000 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Ebola viruses, the notorious culprits behind the deadly Ebola fever. As members of the filovirus group, these viruses have caused numerous devastating outbreaks in equatorial Africa since 1976, resulting in severe and often fatal viral haemorrhagic fever. The intricate TEM image reveals the distinct structure of an Ebola virus, which shares similarities with its cousin, the Marburg virus responsible for green monkey disease. Both viruses exhibit comparable symptoms such as high fever, diarrhoea, haemorrhage, and a distinctive skin rash. Astonishingly enough, monkeys infected by these pathogens also experience illnesses mirroring those observed in humans. Captured at a magnification level of x15,000 on a 35mm scale by Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any company), this visual masterpiece offers us an unprecedented glimpse into the microscopic world that shapes our health landscape. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against infectious diseases and highlights the importance of scientific research to combat such threats. While this awe-inspiring image holds immense educational value for researchers and medical professionals alike, it should not be used for commercial purposes without proper authorization from Science Photo Library. Let us embrace its beauty while acknowledging its significance in advancing our understanding of these formidable viruses.
