Coloured TEM of Nudaurelia beta viruses

Nudaurelia B viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through several Nudaurelia B (beta) viruses (NBV). These are icosahedral (20 sided) RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses which infect the pine tree emperor moth (Nudaurelia cytherea) of South Africa. The viruses reproduce in the cytoplasm of the cells in the moths guts. The larvae of the pine tree emperor moth cause a huge amount of damage to the foliage of pine trees in plantations, stripping large areas bare. These viruses have been considered as a means of biologically controlling the numbers of this destructive insect. Magnification unknown

Biological Control Virus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Nudaurelia beta viruses, specifically the Nudaurelia B (NBV) variant. These remarkable icosahedral RNA viruses are known to infect the pine tree emperor moth, scientifically referred to as Nudaurelia cytherea, found in South Africa. The image reveals a section through multiple NBV viruses, providing an intricate view of their structure and composition. These tiny organisms reproduce within the cytoplasm of cells located in the moths' guts. Interestingly, these larvae play a significant role in defoliating vast areas of pine trees within plantations, causing substantial damage to foliage. Due to their destructive impact on forests, scientists have explored potential biological control methods for managing this insect population. The NBV viruses have emerged as promising candidates for such purposes. Researchers believe that utilizing these viruses could help regulate and reduce the numbers of this harmful insect species naturally. Although it remains unknown at what magnification this photograph was taken, its vivid colours and detailed depiction offer an awe-inspiring glimpse into the microscopic world of animal-virus interactions. This visually stunning print not only highlights scientific research but also serves as a reminder of nature's delicate balance and our ongoing quest for sustainable solutions in pest management.
