Coloured TEM of Rickettsiae bacterium

False-colour shadow transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an individual bacterium of genus Rickettsiae, a group of very small, non- motile, rod-like, Gram-negative bacteria. Like viruses, Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular parasites, ie they cannot live outside of the hosts cells. Rickettsiae infect ticks & mites, through whom they may infect mammals (including man), causing serious diseases. Rickettsia akari causes rickettsial pox, several rickettsial species cause different forms of typhus, & R. rickettsii is responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Magnification: X 38, 000 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour shadow transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single bacterium belonging to the genus Rickettsiae. These Gram-negative bacteria are incredibly small, non-motile, and rod-like in shape. Similar to viruses, Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular parasites, meaning they rely on host cells for survival as they cannot exist outside of them. Rickettsiae primarily infect ticks and mites, which then serve as carriers to transmit these bacteria to mammals, including humans. This transmission can result in severe diseases with potentially grave consequences. For instance, Rickettsia akari is responsible for rickettsial pox while various species of rickettsial bacteria cause different forms of typhus. Additionally, the notorious R. rickettsii is accountable for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The level of detail captured in this TEM image is truly remarkable; it allows us to appreciate the intricate structure and characteristics unique to these bacterial organisms. With a magnification factor of X 38,000 at 35mm size, we gain insight into their complexity and how they interact within their microscopic world. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the realm of microbiology through this extraordinary photograph print that highlights the beauty and significance of these microbes known as Rickettsia sp.
