Coloured TEM of a rubella (German measles) virus

Rubella virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single rubella virus, the causative agent of German measles. It consists of a lipoprotein coat or capsid (yellow) and a core containing single-stranded genetic RNA material (pink). The virus diameter is about 60 nanometres. Rubella belongs to the togavirus group of viruses. German measles is spread in airborne droplets, and occurs commonly in children as a mild rash. Rubella is a risk to unborn babies if the mother contracts the disease in the first four months of pregnancy. Rubella vaccine is now routinely given to young babies, which provides lasting immunity. Magnification: x324 000 at 6x6cm size. x250, 000 at 4.5x4.5cm original size

Measles Virus Virus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a rubella virus, the culprit behind German measles. The image reveals the intricate structure of this tiny pathogen, measuring only about 60 nanometres in diameter. The virus is composed of a lipoprotein coat or capsid, depicted in vibrant yellow hues, surrounding a core that contains single-stranded genetic RNA material represented by an alluring shade of pink. Belonging to the togavirus group, rubella spreads through airborne droplets and commonly affects children with its characteristic mild rash. However, it poses a significant risk to unborn babies if contracted by expectant mothers during the first four months of pregnancy. To combat this threat, young babies now routinely receive the rubella vaccine which provides lasting immunity against the disease. The magnification level at which this image was captured is truly remarkable: x324 000 at 6x6cm size and x250 000 at its original size of 4.5x4.5cm. This high-resolution photograph allows us to appreciate the intricate details and delicate nature of this viral agent responsible for causing German measles.
