Coloured X-ray of a fractured tibia & fibula

Pinned broken leg. Coloured X-ray of a pinned fracture of both the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones). The tibia (larger bone, centre) has been immobilised by metal pins (lower & upper centre). These have been inserted into the bone on either side of the fracture. The pins are held in place by an external metal frame (left of tibia). This is known as external fixation. External fixation is often necessary when treating a comminuted fracture as seen here. Comminuted fractures are those where the bone has shattered into more than two pieces. Fractures of the tibia can take up to 6 months to heal as it is a weight bearing bone

Broken Leg Fibula Fracture Fractured Injury Pinned Tibia Condition Disorder Health Care

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a coloured X-ray of a fractured tibia and fibula, revealing the intricate details of a pinned broken leg. The image depicts both lower leg bones, with the larger tibia at the center immobilized by metal pins inserted on either side of the fracture. These pins are securely held in place by an external metal frame situated to the left of the tibia, known as external fixation. The necessity for external fixation becomes apparent when treating comminuted fractures like this one, where the bone has shattered into multiple pieces. This advanced medical technique provides stability and support to aid in proper healing. Fractures involving the tibia can be particularly challenging to mend due to its role as a weight-bearing bone. Consequently, recovery may take up to six months before complete healing is achieved. This remarkable photograph not only offers insight into orthopedic medicine but also serves as a powerful visual representation of resilience and determination in overcoming physical obstacles. It reminds us of the incredible advancements made in healthcare that enable doctors to restore mobility and quality of life even after severe injuries such as this pinned fracture.
