Coloured X-ray of lumbar vertebrae of the spine
Lumbar spine. Coloured X-ray of four lumbar vertebrae of the human spine, seen in antero- posterior view. Five lumbar bones are found in the lower back, with those here being: L1 (at top) to L4 (at bottom). Part of L5 which articulates with the sacrum of the pelvis is seen below L4. The lumbar vertebrae are the largest of the un- fused vertebrae in the backbone. Each vertebra comprises a wide disc-like body, with transverse bony processes projecting out sideways. These bony processes are muscle attachment points. Between each vertebra is a cartilaginous disc. A canal inside each vertebra accommodates the spinal cord. The spine is made up of 33 vertebrae

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured X-ray of the lumbar vertebrae, providing an intricate view of the human spine from an antero-posterior perspective. The image beautifully captures four lumbar vertebrae, namely L1 to L4, which are located in the lower back region. Additionally, a glimpse of part of L5 can be observed as it articulates with the sacrum of the pelvis below L4. The lumbar vertebrae depicted here are known for their significant size and being unfused within the backbone. Each vertebra exhibits a wide disc-like body accompanied by transverse bony processes that extend outwards. These bony projections serve as attachment points for muscles, highlighting their crucial role in supporting bodily movements. Between each vertebra lies a cartilaginous disc, contributing to flexibility and shock absorption within the spinal column. Moreover, inside each vertebra resides a canal that provides accommodation for the vital spinal cord. With 33 vertebrae making up our spine, this remarkable image offers us an insightful glimpse into one section - specifically focusing on the lumbar region. Its vibrant colours and detailed depiction invite us to marvel at the complexity and beauty inherent in our skeletal structure while emphasizing its importance in maintaining our overall well-being.
