Computer art of radiolarians (from Ernst Haeckel)

Radiolarians. Computer-enhanced engraving of radiolarian species. These one-celled protozoan animals are found in marine plankton. Their silicate skeletons seen here are among natures most beautiful structures. Inside each skeleton is the radiolarian cell; protoplasm extends from pores in the skeleton to form long pseudopodia (not seen), and these tiny cells resemble " little suns". As they float, the pseudopodia trap food particles and the radiolaria feed. Dead radiolarian skeletons are found in large numbers on the seabed, forming fossil deposits. Engraving taken from Ernst Haeckels famous treatise: " Art Forms of Nature" (1904). Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © MEHAU KULYK/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This computer art print showcases the intricate beauty of radiolarians, one-celled protozoan animals that reside in marine plankton. The image features a computer-enhanced engraving of various radiolarian species, highlighting their mesmerizing silicate skeletons. These delicate structures are considered among nature's most exquisite creations. Within each skeleton resides a radiant radiolarian cell, with protoplasm extending from pores in the skeleton to form long pseudopodia (not visible in the image). These tiny cells resemble "little suns" as they gracefully float through the ocean waters. The pseudopodia serve as traps for food particles, allowing these remarkable creatures to feed and sustain themselves. As time passes, dead radiolarian skeletons accumulate on the seabed, forming vast fossil deposits. This particular engraving was taken from Ernst Haeckel's renowned treatise titled "Art Forms of Nature" published in 1904. Haeckel was an esteemed scientist and artist who dedicated his life to studying and illustrating various organisms found in our natural world. The combination of artistry and scientific precision displayed in this print exemplifies the wonders of zoology and highlights the incredible diversity found within our oceans' ecosystems. It serves as a reminder that even microscopic organisms can possess breathtaking beauty when observed closely enough.
