Computer artwork of DNA replication

DNA replication. Computer artwork depicting DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) replication. This segment of DNA is being " unzipped" to form a Y-shaped replication fork. During replication, the two spiral strands of DNA (red) unwind. Next, the bonds between the bases (pink, green, yellow & blue) that form the DNAs genetic code are broken by the enzyme DNA polymerase (zip at centre left). Daughter strands (blue) are built along each strand of parental DNA using the original base sequence as a template for the new matching DNA strands. Finally the enzyme DNA ligase (zips at upper and lower right) " zips" the strands together to form two identical molecules of DNA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases the intricate process of DNA replication. The image depicts a segment of DNA being "unzipped" to form a Y-shaped replication fork, revealing the underlying complexity of genetic reproduction. During replication, the two spiral strands of DNA unwind, exposing their vibrant red color. The bonds between the bases - represented by shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue - are broken by the enzyme DNA polymerase at the center left, resembling a zipper in action. As this delicate dance unfolds, daughter strands (depicted in blue) are meticulously constructed along each parental strand using the original base sequence as a template. This ensures that an exact copy is created with utmost precision. The final step involves another crucial enzyme called DNA ligase. Symbolized by zippers at both upper and lower right corners of the image, it skillfully "zips" together these newly formed strands to create two identical molecules of DNA. This visually stunning representation not only highlights the beauty within biochemistry but also emphasizes its vital role in genetics. It serves as a reminder that every living organism owes its existence to this remarkable process occurring within our very cells. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented artists and scientists alike, this print offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into one of nature's most fundamental processes – DNA replication.
