Coxsackie virus particles, TEM

Coxsackie virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Coxsackie viruses were named after the town in the USA where they were isolated. They are enteroviruses, part of the Picornaviridae group. This group contains small, non-enveloped, icosahedral-shaped viruses (red). Coxsackie viruses, of which there are many types, cause diseases such as aseptic meningitis; herpangina, an acute pharyngitis; hand, foot and mouth disease (not foot and mouth); epidemic myalgia or Bornholm disease; and myocarditis. They are also among the miscellaneous viruses that cause colds. Magnification: x151, 000 when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Coxsackie virus particles, as seen through a transmission electron microscope (TEM). These vibrant red, icosahedral-shaped viruses belong to the Picornaviridae group and are known as enteroviruses. The name "Coxsackie" originates from the town in the USA where they were first isolated. Coxsackie viruses encompass various types that can cause a range of diseases and conditions. Some examples include aseptic meningitis, herpangina (an acute pharyngitis), hand, foot and mouth disease (not to be confused with foot and mouth disease), epidemic myalgia or Bornholm disease, myocarditis, and even common colds. At an impressive magnification of x151,000 when printed at just 10 centimeters high, this image allows us to appreciate the complexity of these pathogenic microorganisms. It serves as a reminder of their significance in biology and medicine. The false color applied to this micrograph enhances our understanding by highlighting key features. As we delve into virology and microbiology research, images like this provide invaluable insights into these infectious agents that impact human health.
