Croesus on the stake, historical artwork C018 / 7093

Croesus on the stake. 1883 engraving of Croesus, King of lydia, (centre) being burnt at the stake. Lydia was an Iron Age kingdom of western Asia Minor, around Anatolia. Croesus was its king from 560 to 547 BC until his defeat by the Persians under Cyrus The Great (Cyrus II, centre left). In the Lydian account, Croesus was placed upon a great pyre by Cyrus orders, as Cyrus wanted to see if any of the heavenly powers would appear to save him from being burned alive

EDITORS COMMENTS
The historical artwork C018/7093 captures a pivotal moment in ancient history - the burning of Croesus, King of Lydia, at the stake. Created in 1883, this powerful engraving depicts Croesus, positioned at the center of attention on a great pyre. Surrounding him are his conquerors, led by Cyrus The Great (Cyrus II), who defeated him and his Lydian kingdom. Croesus ruled Lydia from 560 to 547 BC until his fateful encounter with Cyrus and the Persian army. According to Lydian accounts, Cyrus ordered Croesus to be placed upon the pyre as an ultimate test of divine intervention. This act aimed to challenge any heavenly powers that might save Croesus from being burned alive. The black-and-white illustration portrays not only the intensity of this historical event but also highlights its significance within ancient Greek history. It serves as a reminder of both human triumphs and defeats during this Iron Age period in Asia Minor. This print offers viewers a glimpse into an era long gone by - one filled with power struggles between kingdoms and clashes between mighty armies. As we observe this scene frozen in time, we cannot help but ponder over the complexities of history and marvel at how our world has evolved since then.
