Culex sp. mosquito, light micrograph

Culex mosquito. Light micrograph of an unidentified mosquito (Culex sp.). Mosquitoes belong to the family known as Culicidae (order Diptera) which includes about 1500 species. Only the female mosquitoes bite. They use a piercing proboscis (upper right) which consists of a bundle of no less than six stylets. At the tip of the proboscis blood is mixed with the saliva which prevents clotting and hence the obstruction of the narrow food channel within the proboscis. Culex mosquitoes inhabit urban or rural areas and usually bite in the evening or at night. They can transmit the diseases encephalitis and filariasis. Magnification: x11 at 6x7cm size

Encephalitis Insecta Mosquito Proboscis Type Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Culex sp. mosquito in all its intricate detail, captured through the lens of a light micrograph. Belonging to the Culicidae family and encompassing around 1500 species, mosquitoes are notorious for their biting habits, with only the females indulging in this behavior. The upper right corner of the image reveals their piercing proboscis, composed of at least six stylets. Fascinatingly, these tiny creatures mix blood with their saliva at the tip of their proboscis to prevent clotting and ensure smooth feeding through their narrow food channel. Culex mosquitoes predominantly inhabit both urban and rural areas and tend to bite during evening or nighttime hours. However, beyond being mere nuisances, they also pose health risks as potential carriers of diseases such as encephalitis and filariasis. With a magnification level of x11 at a size of 6x7cm, this photograph provides an up-close glimpse into the world of these buzzing insects. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly insignificant creatures play vital roles within our ecosystem. This stunning visual representation invites us to appreciate nature's diversity while acknowledging the potential dangers that can arise from interactions with it.
