Dental elevator, circa 1830 C017 / 8401

Goats foot dental elevator, made from ebony (handle) and steel. This would have been used for loosening a diseased or painful tooth or its root in preparation for extraction (usually with a tooth key or pelican extractor). Tooth extraction is the earliest known dental procedure, it was used as a last-resort cure for toothache. The instrument is so named due to its cloven head which is hollowed between two points to resemble a goats cloven foot. It is English and dates from around 1830. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a remarkable dental instrument from the early 19th century. Known as a Dental Elevator, this particular model, dating back to circa 1830, was crafted with precision using ebony for its handle and sturdy steel for its functional components. Designed to aid in tooth extraction procedures, the Dental Elevator played a crucial role in alleviating pain caused by diseased or damaged teeth. Before modern dentistry techniques emerged, tooth extraction was considered a last-resort solution for severe toothaches. The Dental Elevator would be used alongside other tools such as the tooth key or pelican extractor to loosen and prepare the affected tooth or root for removal. What makes this instrument truly intriguing is its unique resemblance to a goat's cloven foot. Its hollowed cloven head features two pointed ends that mimic the distinctive shape of this animal's foot. This aesthetic detail adds an artistic touch to an otherwise functional tool. As we admire this antique device against a serene peach background, it serves as a powerful reminder of how far dental care has come since the 1800s. This historical artifact offers us insight into our ancestors' efforts to combat oral ailments and highlights their resourcefulness in creating innovative instruments like the Dental Elevator.
