Diagram used in palmistry, 16th century

Palmistry. 16th century woodcut illustration showing cardinal lines and points for palmistry. Palmistry, or chiromency, is the alleged ability to foresee the future of an individual from the crease lines in the skin of the palms. The lines in this diagram that would be familiar to modern palm readers are the heart line just below the fingers, the head line below this, the C -shaped Life line near the thumb and the diagonal which could be the Sun line. Despite the abundance of practitioners, there is no scientific evidence whatever that such divination is possible. This illustration comes from Epitoma chyromatico by Patricio Tricasso, published in Venice in 1538

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable woodcut illustration from the 16th century, depicting a diagram used in palmistry. Palmistry, also known as chiromancy, is an ancient practice that claims to predict an individual's future by analyzing the lines on their palms. The cardinal lines and points highlighted in this diagram are still recognized by modern palm readers today. Prominently featured are the heart line just below the fingers, the head line beneath it, and the C-shaped Life line near the thumb. Additionally, there is a diagonal line that could potentially represent the Sun line. However, despite its popularity among practitioners during this era, there exists no scientific evidence whatsoever supporting such divination abilities. The illustration originates from "Epitoma chyromatico" written by Patricio Tricasso and published in Venice in 1538. It serves as a stark reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with fortune-telling practices throughout history. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this intriguing piece of art that delves into themes of determination, psychic phenomena, fraudulence associated with charlatanism within palmistry circles. This monochromatic print invites viewers to contemplate both our innate desire for clairvoyance and skepticism towards these mystical arts.
