Dinner in Iguanodon dinosaur

1854 Illustrated London News January 7th, page 22. Dinner in the iguanodon model, at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham. Hosted 31st December 1853 by the Crystal Palace model maker Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. Guests include Edward Forbes, Joseph Prestwich, John Gould, and Richard Owen at the head (the likeness here is poor but Hawkins records the fact in his journal). Scientists instrumental in reconstructing the past are also noted on plaques above the diners, including William Buckland (megalosaurus) Baron Cuvier (Pterodactyle, Megatherium and others) Richard Owen (coined the term dinosaur) and Gideon Mantell who had recently died (Iguanodon and Hyaeolosaurus). At the dinner songs were sung in memory of the antediluvians. The Iguanodon model which weighed over 30 tonnes went on to be displayed in the Sydenham park grounds where it can still be found today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a remarkable event in history - the Dinner in Iguanodon dinosaur. Captured in 1854, this illustration from the Illustrated London News transports us to the Crystal Palace in Sydenham on December 31st, 1853. Hosted by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, renowned model maker of the Crystal Palace, this extraordinary dinner brought together esteemed scientists and intellectuals of their time. Among the distinguished guests were Edward Forbes, Joseph Prestwich, John Gould, and Richard Owen - though Hawkins himself admits that his depiction of Owen's likeness is less than accurate. The scene showcases not only these eminent individuals but also pays homage to other influential figures who played pivotal roles in reconstructing our understanding of prehistoric life. Plaques above the diners bear names such as William Buckland (megalosaurus), Baron Cuvier (Pterodactyle, Megatherium and others), Richard Owen (who coined the term dinosaur), and Gideon Mantell (Iguanodon and Hyaeolosaurus). Sadly, Mantell had recently passed away at that time. During this unique gathering, songs were sung as a tribute to those who roamed Earth before mankind - an ode to the antediluvians. The colossal Iguanodon model itself weighed over 30 tonnes and would later find its place among Sydenham park grounds where it still stands today. Paul D. Stewart's artistry has beautifully captured this momentous occasion through his meticulous reconstruction. This monochrome masterpiece brings alive an era when science met imagination amidst a grand feast within the belly of an ancient giant.
