Diver and shipwreck

Diver and shipwreck at the surface. This is the wreck of the Skipjack II, a Japanese fishing boat that was sunk at the end of its working life. The bow protrudes about 5 metres above the surface of the water. It lies in the channel separating the Felivaru and Gaaerifaru islands of the Hinnavaru region of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Wrecks are popular as diving sites for the coral growth and fish found there. Photographed in 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a diver and shipwreck at the surface of the water, showcasing the haunting beauty of the underwater world. The wreck in question is that of the Skipjack II, a Japanese fishing boat that met its demise after years of dedicated service. Rising about 5 meters above the ocean's surface, its bow stands as a testament to both human industry and nature's resilience. Located in the channel between Felivaru and Gaaerifaru islands in Maldives' Hinnavaru region, this shipwreck has become an alluring diving site for enthusiasts seeking adventure beneath the waves. The coral growth and diverse marine life surrounding it make it an ideal habitat for fish species to thrive. Photographed back in 2003, this image not only showcases man-made structures meeting their watery fate but also raises awareness about environmental issues such as pollution caused by industrial activities. It serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect our oceans and preserve these fragile ecosystems for future generations. The presence of a lone diver adds depth to this visual narrative, symbolizing mankind's fascination with exploring untouched realms while highlighting our interconnectedness with nature. Amidst tropical surroundings and crystal-clear waters, this print encapsulates both leisurely holiday vibes and thought-provoking reflections on humanity's impact on wildlife and environment.
