Dom Gauthey, French monk and inventor

Dom Gauthey, historical artwork. Dom Gauthey was a French Benedictine monk who invented a method of transmitting messages by sound in 1782. This form of acoustic telegraph used an 800-metre-long metal tube, which was struck with a hammer to make series of sounds, similar to Morse code. The sounds were interpreted by a listener at the other end of the pipe. From La Telegraphie Historique by Alexis Belloc (1888)
