The dome of the Keck Telescope and star trails

The dome of the Keck Telescope silhouetted against star trails centred on the Polaris star (bottom left). The Keck Telescope is the largest optical telescope in the world and was completed on April 14th 1992. It is composed of 36 hexagonal mirrors 1.8m across, which form a unique surface with a diameter of 10 metres. Each mirror has a specific shape and during observations a network of pressure sensors and motorised actuators, controlled by a central computer, maintains the correct position of the entire mirror. The Keck Telescope is situated on the top of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii and by the end of 1996 an identical telescope will be built close to it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring dome of the Keck Telescope, standing tall against a mesmerizing backdrop of star trails. The silhouette of the dome is perfectly framed by these celestial streaks, with Polaris, also known as the North Star, shining brightly in the bottom left corner. As the largest optical telescope in existence since its completion on April 14th, 1992, the Keck Telescope boasts an impressive array of features. Comprised of 36 hexagonal mirrors measuring 1.8 meters across each, it forms a unique surface spanning a diameter of 10 meters. To ensure precise observations and data collection, every mirror has been meticulously shaped and calibrated. During operations at this remarkable observatory situated atop Mauna Kea – a dormant volcano in Hawaii – advanced technology takes center stage. A network of pressure sensors and motorized actuators work harmoniously under central computer control to maintain optimal positioning for all mirrors. The significance and impact of this groundbreaking telescope are further emphasized by plans to construct an identical twin nearby by late 1996. Together, these telescopes will continue pushing boundaries in astronomy and astrophysics research. This stunning print from Science Photo Library encapsulates not only scientific achievement but also serves as a reminder that our quest for knowledge extends far beyond what meets the eye here on Earth's surface.
