Drawing of human venous system (Leonardo da Vinci)

Venous system. Drawing of a " venous figure" by Leonardo da Vinci, taken from his Anatomical note- books. This standing figure with its expressive sad face shows the blood circulation (veins) and some body organs. Dated about 1494, it is an early drawing by da Vinci, before he had access to dissection. The anatomy is therefore in places incorrect such as the circulation around the heart and liver, oddly shaped kidneys, and ureters not entering the urinary bladder. Veins in the arms and legs are fairly accurate. Anatomical practice at this time was to portray the " tree of the vessels" against " spiritual parts" (the liver and heart). Da Vincis " mirror" writing is seen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of the human venous system, taken from his Anatomical notebooks. Created around 1494, this early artwork by da Vinci provides a glimpse into his exploration of the human body before he had access to dissection. The standing figure depicted in the drawing features a sorrowful expression on its face, effectively conveying both emotion and anatomical details. While some inaccuracies exist due to limited knowledge at the time, such as peculiarly shaped kidneys and incorrect circulation patterns around the heart and liver, the veins in the arms and legs are remarkably precise. Da Vinci's unique approach involved portraying the "tree of vessels" against what he referred to as "spiritual parts" namely the liver and heart. One intriguing aspect of this image is da Vinci's use of mirror writing, which can be observed within his annotations. This distinctive characteristic adds an additional layer of fascination to an already remarkable piece. As we delve into this historical image, we gain insight into da Vinci's relentless pursuit of understanding human anatomy through artistry. This print serves as a testament to his genius and enduring legacy in both scientific inquiry and artistic mastery.
