Earth centred on Australasia
Australasia. Combined visible and infrared satellite image of Australasia taken by the Chinese FY-2 satellite. This geostationary weather satellite was launched by China on 10th June 1997. In this image, Australia can be seen at lower right, and India is at upper left. China is above India, covered in cloud. At lower left is the Indian Ocean, with the Pacific Ocean at upper right. At centre, smothered in clouds, are the islands which make up Indonesia and Malaysia. Weather satellites such as FY-2 are used to track the movements of major weather systems to help with forecasts. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Earth centred on Australasia, captured by the Chinese FY-2 satellite. The combined visible and infrared satellite image provides a unique perspective of our planet from space. As we gaze upon this remarkable picture, Australia emerges at the lower right corner, while India graces the upper left side. China looms above India, veiled in a blanket of clouds. The vast expanse of the Indian Ocean stretches across the lower left region, merging seamlessly with the Pacific Ocean that dominates the upper right quadrant. However, it is at the center where our attention is drawn - an enchanting sight unfolds as Indonesia and Malaysia's islands are shrouded in a thick layer of clouds. This awe-inspiring image serves a crucial purpose beyond its aesthetic appeal. Weather satellites like FY-2 play an instrumental role in tracking major weather systems to aid meteorologists in making accurate forecasts. By observing Earth's atmospheric conditions from above, scientists gain invaluable insights into climate patterns and storm movements. Captured on 23rd December 1997, this photograph encapsulates both scientific significance and visual splendor. It reminds us of our planet's interconnectedness and vulnerability amidst nature's forces. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary glimpse into Earth science through their exceptional collection of satellite imagery photographs.
