Egyptian mathematical papyrus. Known as the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus, this roll of papyrus is from Ancient Egypt and dates from the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. It was purchased in Thebes in the 1890s by Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenishchev. The 5.5-metre-long scroll contains 25 mathematical problems, including algebra, arithmetic and geometry. This is problem number 14, for the volume of a frustum, a truncated square pyramid (shown at left). This problem, and others, was deciphered by Soviet orientalist Vasily Vasilievich Struve. Photographed in 1971, in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Egyptian mathematical papyrus known as the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus. Dating back to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC, this ancient roll of papyrus was acquired by Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenishchev in Thebes during the 1890s. Currently housed in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, this 5.5-meter-long scroll contains a wealth of mathematical knowledge. Among its contents are 25 intriguing mathematical problems encompassing algebra, arithmetic, and geometry. Problem number 14 depicted in this image focuses on determining the volume of a frustum—a truncated square pyramid—illustrated on the left side. Deciphering these complex equations and hieroglyphics was made possible by Soviet orientalist Vasily Vasilievich Struve. Photographed in 1971, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into both history and academia as it captures an invaluable piece of literature from ancient Egypt. This extraordinary artifact sheds light on their advanced understanding of mathematics during that era. The significance of this discovery extends beyond borders and time periods, bridging Europe with Ancient Egypt through archeological research and scientific exploration. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit to unravel mysteries hidden within antiquity's embrace.
