Emperor penguins and chicks

Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) with their three-month-old chicks (grey). The adults feed them by regurgitating fish. These are the only penguins to breed during the Antarctic winter. Each pair produces a single egg, which the males incubate on their feet, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in large groups. Males fast during the two-month incubation period and lose almost half their body mass by the end. The emperor is the largest of the penguins, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed at Cape Washington, Antarctica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming scene of Emperor penguins and their adorable three-month-old chicks in the vast expanse of Antarctica. The majestic adults, Aptenodytes forsteri, diligently care for their young by regurgitating fish to nourish them. These remarkable creatures are the only penguin species that brave the harsh Antarctic winter to breed. During this challenging time, each pair produces a solitary egg which is carefully incubated by the males on their feet. To survive the extreme cold, these devoted fathers huddle together in large groups, enduring fasting and losing nearly half of their body mass over two months. Standing tall at an impressive 115 centimeters and weighing between 30 to 40 kilograms, Emperor penguins hold the title as the largest among all penguin species. This photograph was taken at Cape Washington, showcasing a thriving colony where these flightless birds gather to reproduce and raise their offspring. The image beautifully portrays nature's wonders as it highlights both adult and juvenile emperor penguins amidst a breathtaking backdrop of icy landscapes. It serves as a reminder of how these carnivorous marine creatures adapt to life in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments while nurturing new generations within their tight-knit communities. Captured by Science Photo Library, this stunning print encapsulates not only the beauty but also emphasizes important aspects such as reproduction, zoology, wildlife conservation efforts surrounding these magnificent birds living harmoniously with nature in Antarctica's frigid embrace.
