Emperor penguins sheltering chicks

Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) sheltering three-week-old chicks. The males shelter the chicks against the cold by holding them on their feet and covering them with a fold of skin. Emperors are the only penguins to breed in the Antarctic over winter. The males incubate the egg, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in small groups. The females return from coastal waters as soon as the chick hatches. The parents feed the chick on regurgitated fish. The emperor is the largest penguin, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed at Dawson-Lambton Glacier, Antarctica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable bond between Emperor penguins and their adorable three-week-old chicks. Aptenodytes forsteri, the largest of all penguin species, are captured in this moment at Dawson-Lambton Glacier in Antarctica. As winter envelopes the icy landscape, these resilient creatures brave the harsh conditions to breed. In a heartwarming display of parental care, male Emperors shelter their precious offspring against the biting cold by cradling them on their feet and covering them with a protective fold of skin. These devoted fathers endure extreme temperatures by huddling together in small groups while incubating eggs until they hatch. As spring arrives and coastal waters thaw, females return to reunite with their newly hatched chicks. The parents diligently nourish their young ones with regurgitated fish obtained from oceanic depths. This piscivorous diet sustains both adults and juveniles alike. Emperor penguins exemplify nature's resilience as they form massive colonies known as rookeries during breeding season. Flightless yet majestic, these carnivorous birds stand tall at around 115 centimeters and weigh an impressive 30 to 40 kilograms. This awe-inspiring photograph captures not only a tender moment between parent and child but also highlights the incredible adaptations that enable Emperor penguins to thrive in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments – Antarctica.
