Engine of 1903 Wright Flyer C016 / 2530

Engine of Wright Flyer of 1903. Rear view of the 1903 motor of the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur) in their workshop on 1 January 1928, before its shipment to the Science Museum, London at the end of that month. It was this engine that was used for the first powered flight, made by Orville Wright on 17 December 1903 near Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. Orville lay on the lower wing next to the chain-driven engine, which generated 12 horse power. The flight lasted for about 12 seconds, covering a distance of 36.5 metres at an altitude between 2.5 and 3.5 metres. Photographed by one of the Wright brothers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable engine of the 1903 Wright Flyer, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized the world of aviation. Captured in their workshop on January 1,1928, Orville and Wilbur Wright's creation is seen from a rear view perspective before its shipment to the prestigious Science Museum in London later that month. It was this very engine that propelled Orville Wright into history on December 17,1903, as he achieved mankind's first powered flight near Kill Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The awe-inspiring moment lasted a mere 12 seconds but covered an impressive distance of 36.5 meters at an altitude between 2.5 and 3.5 meters. In this monochrome image taken by one of the ingenious Wright brothers themselves, we witness Orville lying next to his chain-driven masterpiece on the lower wing of the aircraft. Generating a modest yet mighty force of twelve horsepower, this technological marvel paved the way for future advancements in aviation. The photograph not only captures a pivotal moment in history but also encapsulates the spirit of pioneering ingenuity and relentless determination exhibited by these visionary inventors. It serves as a testament to their unwavering pursuit of human flight and marks an essential milestone in our understanding and exploration of transportation technology. Preserved within the Library of Congress' extensive collection and made available through Science Photo Library, this extraordinary snapshot offers us a glimpse into both past triumphs and future possibilities within aerospace engineering.
