Engraving of Hans Christian Oersted

Engraving of Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish physicist, born in 1777 and died in 1851. He is seen here with his assistant observing an experiment to demonstrate the effect of an electric current on a magnetic compass needle. This was the first demonstration of a connection between electricity & magnetism & in retrospect his experiment is seen as the foundation of the study of electromagnetism. His discovery was published in 1820. Oersted did not carry his experimentation with electromagnetism any further, but his discovery unleashed a whirl of activity in the field of physics. In 1934 a unit of magnetic field strength was named an oersted in his honour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Danish physicist, Hans Christian Oersted, alongside his assistant as they observe a groundbreaking experiment. The engraving captures the pivotal moment when Oersted demonstrated the profound connection between electricity and magnetism by showcasing the effect of an electric current on a magnetic compass needle. Born in 1777 and passing away in 1851, Oersted's contribution to science cannot be overstated. His remarkable discovery, published in 1820, laid the foundation for the study of electromagnetism that continues to shape our understanding of physics today. Although Oersted did not delve further into his experimentation with electromagnetism, his revelation unleashed a whirlwind of activity within the field. In recognition of his immense contributions, a unit of magnetic field strength was named "oersted" in his honor. This mesmerizing portrait not only immortalizes Oersted but also symbolizes an era marked by scientific exploration and innovation. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity while reminding us that even seemingly small experiments can have far-reaching implications for future generations. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this significant moment from history through their lens, allowing us to appreciate both the brilliance of Hans Christian Oersted and the transformative power of scientific discovery.
