Eyelash mite tail, SEM
Eyelash mite tail. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tail (centre) of an eyelash, or follicle, mite (Demodex folliculorum) protruding from a dissected human hair follicle. This harmless parasite infests hair follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. One follicle may contain up to 25 growing mites. They feed on oily secretions from the skins sebaceous glands, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation is usually symptomless, but allergic reactions to the mites in susceptible individuals can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x695 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of an eyelash mite tail, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The colored SEM image reveals the central position of the mite's tail as it protrudes from a dissected human hair follicle. Known as Demodex folliculorum, these harmless parasites infest hair follicles found around the eyelids, nose, and ear canals of humans. Astonishingly, a single follicle may house up to 25 growing mites at any given time. These tiny creatures sustain themselves by feeding on oily secretions produced by sebaceous glands in our skin and dead skin cells. While most individuals remain symptomless despite this commensal relationship with eyelash mites, susceptible individuals may experience allergic reactions leading to hair loss and acne. This fascinating photograph sheds light on their role as potential allergens. With a magnification level of x695 at 6x7cm size, this image offers us a glimpse into the hidden world of these arachnid-like creatures that coexist with us on our bodies. It serves as a reminder that even within our own ecosystem, there are countless organisms thriving alongside us—some beneficial while others trigger adverse reactions. Science Photo Library has once again provided an extraordinary visual representation that merges artistry and scientific exploration to deepen our understanding of wildlife and its impact on human health.
