Eyelash mite tails, SEM

Eyelash mite tails. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tails (pink) of three eyelash, or follicle, mites (Demodex folliculorum), protruding from a human hair follicle. The hair shaft (upper right) is also seen. These harmless parasites infest follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. One follicle may contain up to 25 growing mites. They feed on oily secretions from the skins sebaceous glands, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation is usually symptomless, but, in some individuals, allergic reactions to the mites can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of eyelash mite tails, revealing a mesmerizing glimpse into the lives of these tiny creatures. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), three Demodex folliculorum mites can be seen protruding from a human hair follicle, their delicate pink tails delicately swaying in the microscopic breeze. These harmless parasites have made themselves at home in the depressions of our skin that house hair roots, particularly around the eyelids, nose, and ear canals. Astonishingly, one single follicle may accommodate up to 25 growing mites. Their diet consists mainly of oily secretions from sebaceous glands and dead skin cells. While infestation is typically symptomless for most individuals, some unfortunate souls may experience allergic reactions to these minuscule critters. These reactions can manifest as hair loss or acne due to an immune response triggered by contact with allergens produced by the mites. The magnification level of x250 allows us to appreciate every minute detail within this 6x7cm image frame. It serves as a reminder that even within our own bodies lies an entire ecosystem teeming with diverse life forms. This photograph not only highlights the beauty found in nature's smallest creations but also reminds us of our interconnectedness with all living beings on Earth.
