F / col TEM of section through blood platelets

False colour transmission electron micrograph of a section through activated blood platelets. Platelets (thrombocytes) are formed in the bone marrow, and circulate in blood in large numbers. In an unactivated state they are round/oval, whereas activated platelets develop pseudopodia, or extensions from the cell walls. Platelets contain cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria (small grey bodies), endoplasmic reticulum & granules (dark stain). Platelets function in 2 ways; they plug defects in the walls of capillaries & also are involved in clott- ing. They also release serotonin, a blood vessel constrictor substance. Mag: x22, 000 at 6x7cm size

Activated Blood Clotting Platelet Platelets Thrombocyte

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of blood platelets. In this false color transmission electron micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the inner workings of these tiny cells that play a crucial role in our circulatory system. The image reveals an activated blood platelet, which has undergone remarkable transformations compared to its unactivated state. Once round or oval-shaped, it now exhibits pseudopodia - extensions protruding from its cell walls. These activated platelets contain various cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria (small grey bodies), endoplasmic reticulum, and granules (dark stain). Platelets serve two essential functions within our body. Firstly, they act as plug-like structures that seal defects in capillary walls, preventing excessive bleeding. Secondly, they actively participate in clotting processes to ensure wounds heal efficiently. Moreover, these remarkable cells release serotonin - a substance known for constricting blood vessels. This further highlights their multifaceted nature and involvement in maintaining proper vascular function. With a magnification of x22,000 and printed at 6x7cm size, this photograph offers us an up-close look at the intricacies of human anatomy and the vital role played by platelets in our overall health and well-being.
