F. colour SEM of macrophage & blood cells in liver

Liver. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a section of liver tissue showing a group of red blood cells and a macrophage (yellow) in a capillary. Hepatic macrophages, also known as stellate cells of von Kupffer, are mostly found in the venous blood vessels of the liver and are responsible for the destruction of cellular debris, bacteria and aged red blood cells. Two bile canaliculi (green), or cholangioles, are also visible. Bile is secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder: from here it is released into the duodenum where it is needed for fat digestion. Magnification: x1270 at 6x7cm size. x1985 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world within our liver. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the bustling activity of blood cells and macrophages in this vital organ. The image reveals a section of liver tissue where red blood cells form a vibrant cluster while a macrophage stands out in striking yellow amidst them. Macrophages, known as stellate cells of von Kupffer, play an essential role in maintaining the health of our liver. Mostly found in its venous blood vessels, these remarkable cells diligently carry out their duties by eliminating cellular debris, bacteria, and aged red blood cells. The photograph also unveils two bile canaliculi or cholangioles depicted in mesmerizing green hues. These tiny ducts serve as conduits for bile secretion by the liver. Bile is then stored in the gallbladder before being released into the duodenum to aid fat digestion. With magnification at x1270 for a 6x7cm size and x1985 for 4x5ins dimensions, this print allows us to appreciate the intricacies that exist within our own bodies on a microscopic level. It serves as both an educational tool and an artistic representation of human anatomy – reminding us of the wonders that lie hidden beneath our skin's surface.
