Fairy Shrimp male C015 / 0717
Fairy Shrimp Chirocephalus diaphanus male. Fairy shrimps swim around on their backs, propelled by the constantly moving legs. Fossils of Fairy Shrimps have been found in Cambrian rocks in Sweden. Fairy Shrimps lack a carapace, and are considered to be rather primitive as they have a relatively large number of segments and the legs are not specialised. The body is elongated, and bears 11 pairs of legs fringed with bristles; the head curves downwards, and in males the second pair of antennae are modified claspers for grabbing females during mating. They grow up to 25mm in length. They are the only Fairy Shrimp to be found in UK, this species inhabits temporary pools, ranging from ponds to muddy ruts, and shows a preference for sites that are subject to regular disturbance by vehicles, livestock, or ploughing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing world of the Fairy Shrimp male C015 / 0717 (Fairy Shrimp Chirocephalus diaphanus male). These enchanting creatures defy gravity as they gracefully swim around on their backs, propelled by their constantly moving legs. Fossils of these delicate beings have been discovered in Cambrian rocks in Sweden, revealing their ancient lineage. Unlike other shrimp species, Fairy Shrimps lack a protective carapace and are considered to be rather primitive. With a relatively large number of segments and unspecialized legs, they showcase a unique beauty. Their elongated bodies bear 11 pairs of legs adorned with bristles while the head curves downwards. In males, the second pair of antennae is modified into claspers used for grabbing females during mating rituals. Growing up to an impressive length of 25mm, these Fairy Shrimps are exclusive inhabitants of the UK. They thrive in temporary pools ranging from ponds to muddy ruts but show a particular fondness for sites regularly disturbed by vehicles, livestock, or ploughing. This extraordinary photograph not only highlights the intricate details and vibrant colors that adorn this living fossil but also serves as a reminder of our planet's rich biodiversity.
