False colour SEM of a bee sting

Bee sting. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the posterior end of a honeybee Apis mellifera showing the bees sting (needlelike). The sting is a modification of the female ovipositor, or egg- laying apparatus. The ovipositor is no longer used to lay eggs, but instead serves as a weapon of defense and as a means of paralysing the bees prey by injection. Only females sting. The sting consists of moveable chitinous elements, into which the ducts of two glands open (red, at bottom): one producing poison. The barbed sting is found only on worker bees. Magnification x12 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a bee sting, captured through a false color scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the posterior end of a honeybee Apis mellifera, highlighting its needle-like sting. This remarkable structure is actually a modified version of the female ovipositor, which was originally used for laying eggs but now serves as both a weapon of defense and an injection mechanism to paralyze prey. Fascinatingly, only female bees possess stingers. The moveable chitinous elements that compose the sting are clearly visible in this image, with two glands opening into them – one producing poison. It's important to note that worker bees exclusively have barbed stings. The magnification level employed here allows us to appreciate every minute detail at 12 times their original size on a 6x4.5cm scale. Through this stunning photograph from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into nature's ingenuity and complexity within the realm of insects. This visually striking portrayal not only appeals to enthusiasts in fields such as zoology and entomology but also captivates anyone with an appreciation for wildlife photography or scientific exploration. By shedding light on these microscopic wonders, we can better understand and admire the incredible adaptations found in our natural world.
