False-colour SEM of lamellae in compact bone

Compact bone lamellae. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of bony lamellae. They are found in the compact bone and are made of compacted collagen fibres and ground substances. The cells responsible for their production are known as osteoblasts. During bone formation osteoblasts lay down a bone matrix in a lamellar, sheet-like form which is subsequently mineralised by the formation of calcium phosphate crystals. Most lamellae are concentrically arranged around pre-existing blood vessels forming the so called Haversian systems or osteons. Magnification: x1060 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1700 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of compact bone lamellae in a false-colour scanning electron micrograph. The image reveals the remarkable structure and composition of these lamellae, which are crucial components of compact bone found within the human body. Composed of densely packed collagen fibers and ground substances, these bony lamellae play a vital role in maintaining bone strength and integrity. Osteoblasts, specialized cells responsible for their production, meticulously lay down a sheet-like bone matrix during the process of bone formation. This matrix is subsequently mineralized by the formation of calcium phosphate crystals. The concentric arrangement of most lamellae around pre-existing blood vessels creates what is known as Haversian systems or osteons. These systems contribute to efficient nutrient supply and waste removal within bones. With an impressive magnification level that allows us to explore this microscopic world at x1060 (at 6x7cm size) or x1700 (at 4x5 inch size), this photograph provides a unique glimpse into the hidden wonders within our bodies. It serves as a testament to the incredible complexity and precision that exists on even the smallest scale. This stunning image from Science Photo Library invites us to marvel at nature's ingenuity while deepening our understanding of anatomy, compact bones, collagen fibers, and bony lamellae - all essential elements for supporting our skeletal framework.
