False-colour SEM of secreting gastric glands

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of secreting gastric glands of the stomach. Gastric glands occur as downgrowths of the stomach epithe- lium, forming pits (seen here). From the base of these pits, specialized cells produce digestive enzymes, acid and hormones. The wide diameter of these pits suggest that they are active and secreting. The surface epithelium of simple columnar cells around the mouth of these pits, produces mucous. Copious amounts of mucous are needed and a thick gastric lining, to protect the stomach while chemicals act to digest the food within it. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x75 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of secreting gastric glands in the stomach. Through false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are able to witness the fascinating world within our digestive system. The gastric glands, which appear as downgrowths from the stomach epithelium, form pits that can be seen in this image. From these pits, specialized cells work tirelessly to produce essential components for digestion including digestive enzymes, acid, and hormones. The wide diameter of these pits suggests their active state of secretion. Surrounding the mouth of these pits, a surface epithelium composed of simple columnar cells produces copious amounts of mucous. This thick gastric lining is crucial in protecting the delicate stomach while powerful chemicals act upon food to break it down. The magnification level at x50 for a 6x7cm size and x75 for a 4x5 inch size allows us to appreciate even the smallest intricacies within this microscopic landscape. By delving into such detailed images like this one provided by Science Photo Library, we gain valuable insights into human anatomy and physiology. This mesmerizing photograph not only highlights the complexity and beauty found within our bodies but also serves as a reminder of how remarkable our digestive system truly is.
