False-colour SEM through the wall of the duodenum

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the duodenum. The duodenal wall has muscle layers (at far left, brown). Long ridge-like villi (blue, folds in the wall) project into the central lumen (at right). Villi greatly increase the absorptive & secretory surface of the duodenum. Digestive and stomach-acid neutralising enzymes are secreted by the duodenum; food is further digested here; this food is then absorbed into the blood through capillaries found in each villus. To aid absorption, villi are more widely distributed in the duodenum than elsewhere in the intestine. Magnification: x100 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x160 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the duodenum's wall. The intricate details of this section through the duodenum are brought to life with vibrant colors. At the far left, we can observe the muscle layers in a rich brown hue, providing structural support to this vital organ. The most striking feature captured in this image is the long ridge-like villi that project into the central lumen on the right side. These magnificent blue folds not only add visual appeal but also serve an essential purpose. Villi significantly increase both absorptive and secretory surfaces within the duodenum, playing a crucial role in digestion. Within these villi lie capillaries that facilitate absorption by allowing digested food to enter directly into our bloodstream. This process is aided by digestive enzymes secreted by the duodenum while simultaneously neutralizing stomach acid. Interestingly, compared to other parts of our intestine, villi are more widely distributed throughout the duodenum. This strategic arrangement enhances absorption efficiency and ensures optimal nutrient uptake from our diet. With magnifications ranging from x100 at 6x7cm size to x160 at 4x5 inch size, this SEM print offers viewers a close-up glimpse into one of our body's remarkable systems – digestion. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed and interconnected our human bodies truly are.
